The Constitutional Court of Georgia accepted the lawsuit for the impeachment of President Zurabishvili

The Constitutional Court of Georgia accepted for consideration the constitutional proposal for the impeachment of President Salome Zurabishvili, which was previously submitted by the ruling Georgian Dream party. About this “Sputnik Georgia” writes with reference to the press service of the court.

Georgian Dream submitted a constitutional motion to launch impeachment proceedings on September 12. The ruling party made this decision because of Zurabishvili’s trip to Europe, despite the government’s refusal. On August 31, she went to meetings with European leaders in support of granting Georgia candidate status for EU membership.

Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili called the decision to initiate impeachment proceedings fair and said that he personally sent the president refusals in connection with her foreign visits. The head of government explained that the main reason was Zurabishvili’s speech in parliament, during which she stated that Georgia did not receive EU candidate status because it did not deserve it. The Georgian Prime Minister noted that after this “no evidence is needed that trust [к президенту] lost.”

According to Sputnik Georgia, if the constitutional court confirms the president’s violation of the constitution, then within 10 days the parliament will begin to consider the court’s conclusion. It is noted that without the support of the opposition, it will not be possible to complete the impeachment procedure, since this requires a minimum of 100 votes, and the parliamentary majority now has only 83 mandates.
