At the upcoming congress of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation on December 23, a candidate for the 2024 presidential election will be chosen. According to “Vedomosti”, most likely it will be deputy Nikolai Kharitonov. At the congress of “New People” on December 23, a decision will also be made on the candidate; according to the publication, with a high degree of probability the party will choose its leader Alexei Nechaev.

Vedomosti sources close to the Communist Party faction say that the party had only three candidates – Gennady Zyuganov, Pavel Grudinin and Nikolai Kharitonov. The latter currently holds the position of head of the Committee for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic. “There are a lot of conversations, everything is being weighed, so who, what and how – at the congress, I think everything will be clearly defined,” Mr. Kharitonov said in a conversation with the publication.

Two acquaintances of State Duma Deputy Speaker Vladislav Davankov told Vedomosti about the nomination of Alexei Nechaev from the New People party. According to them, the nomination of Vladislav Davankov was actively discussed in the party, in particular, because of his high media activity. However, during the congress they plan to focus on the candidacy of Alexei Nechaev, Vedomosti’s interlocutors say. “The decision has been made, and the talk that someone else might join the party is just an entourage,” the publication’s source said.

On December 8, “New People” announced that the choice of candidate would be made from three people – Alexei Nechaev, Vladislav Davankov and the former mayor of Yakutsk Sardana Avksentyeva. At the same time, Vedomosti reports that the nomination of Ms. Avksentyeva was not even allowed by Nechaev “due to the difficult attitude towards her fame.”
