As the government calls everyone to make efforts of energy sobriety in view of this winter, the Phocaean city will soon turn off its main monuments at night. “By the end of September, certain sites, the biggest ones, the prefecture, the Pharo, the Longchamp palace, La Major, the opera, will be off from a certain time.“, declared Didier El Rharbaye, municipal councilor of the city, responsible in particular for sustainable lighting for nightlife, at BFM Marseille.
The elected official explains that the city wishes “show the example to the people of Marseille“, and “that we take it seriously“. “We cannot ask the Marseillais to save money and us not to do so.“, he adds. Some Marseille monuments are already extinguished at night, such as the Notre-Dame de la Garde basilica, plunged into darkness from midnight.

If the town hall manages a total of 141 buildings, only a few would be affected by this measure. Their extinction at night would represent only 1% of the city’s electricity bill, indicates BFM Marseille.
