China sharply criticized the decision of the European Parliament deputies, who by a majority vote recently decided to recognize Russia as a “sponsor of terrorism” in connection with the conflict in Ukraine.

According to Reuters, this move is largely symbolic, since the EU does not have the appropriate legal framework to support it. So some observers have called it a political show in which the European Parliament is labeling Russia in an attempt to damage its reputation, create more diplomatic problems for Moscow, and marginalize it on the world stage.

Over the years, the European Parliament has often formulated and adopted such resolutions for the main reason – the desire for more power. The European Parliament sees itself as a legislative body, but it is not satisfied with its own weight in the decision-making procedures in the EU. Thus, with such a vote, he loudly expresses his political position in order to impose his influence on other decision-making bodies, Cui Hongjian, director of the European Studies Department of the China Institute of International Studies, told Global Times.

Cui Hongjian added that there is a bigger problem behind this phenomenon: there is no consensus on exactly what European interests are, and different forces are fighting for the right to determine them. Some pragmatic governments believe it is in Europe’s interest to reduce ideological confrontation. But the European Parliament is of the opposite opinion.

However, adopting a resolution such as declaring Russia a “state sponsor of terrorism” would only be counterproductive in trying to find a constructive way out of the Ukrainian crisis, let alone a healthy security environment for Europeans.

Not to escalate the conflict, to cool down the tension, to look for a political solution is now most in line with European interests. This is the general picture.
