Based on a survey, the Bank of Russia compiled a portrait of a victim of cyber fraud. According to material Central Bank, most often women aged 25 to 44 years old, with secondary education and an average level of income, encounter cyber fraud.

The Central Bank study notes that in 2023, among victims of cyber fraud, the proportion of women became significantly higher than men (11% more); in 2022, the advantage was 8%. According to the survey, among the victims there were 55.5% women and 44.5% men. The age of the victims ranged from 25 to 64 years. At the age of 20-24 years, 8.3% encountered scammers, at the age of 25-44 years – 37.8%, 45-64 years – 28.4%, over 65 years – 15.4%.

Among the respondents, 25.9% have higher education, 41.3% have secondary education, and 32.8% have general education. The level of income of victims of cyber fraud is most often average (44.8%), 27.8% and 27.4% of them have low and high income, respectively.

In 2023, the share of fraud using instant messengers increased (by 10.5%), however, cases of telephone fraud predominate, despite their slight decrease of 6%. The total share of fraud through a phone call or SMS message is 54%, through instant messengers – 22.5%.

The Central Bank notes that 87.6% of respondents did not fall for tricks and did not take any actions when interacting with scammers. At the same time, those who suffered from scammers most often transferred money to the attackers or provided codes from SMS – the share of such people was 15.3%.

According to the regulator, 64.1% of respondents lose up to 20 thousand rubles as a result of fraudulent attacks, 17.9% of respondents lose from 20 to 100 thousand rubles, 9.9% of respondents lose up to 500 thousand rubles. More than 1 million rubles. lost 4.3% of respondents. The Central Bank notes that 78% of respondents who lost up to 20 thousand rubles do not contact any authorities in connection with an attack by criminals. At the same time, 34.1% of all respondents in such cases turn to their bank, 27.7% – to the police, 27.3% – do not turn anywhere.
