The CEC allowed the postponement of elections in new regions at the last moment

The CEC of Russia may postpone elections in some areas of the new regions at the last moment, but now there is no such need. This was stated by the chairman of the CEC Ella Pamfilova, transmits TASS.
The reason for the postponement may be a sharp deterioration in the situation in one or another new subject of Russia and the emergence of a security threat for voters.
“We can use this right until the last moment. That is, if before September 10, before the start of voting, we see that in some area on some territory the situation threatens to hold elections, we can postpone them. While everything is going well, our colleagues are working,” Pamfilova explained.
This year, the unified voting day in Russia will take place on September 10. Elections from 8 to 10 September will pass and in new regions – DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions. Residents will elect deputies to local legislative assemblies, which will then hold a vote to elect the heads of subjects.
The new regions became part of the Russian Federation following referendums on September 30, 2022. Since October of the same year, by decree of the President of the Russian Federation, martial law has been introduced in the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions.
At the end of May, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law that excludes the ban on holding referendums and elections to government bodies in those regions where martial law is in effect. According to the adopted document, the head of such a subject can send an application to the CEC for holding elections or a referendum. The CEC is obliged to consider the application within five days and consult with the FSB and the Ministry of Defense.
