Belarusian border guards discovered the bodies of two refugees on the border with Latvia, reported press service of the Border Committee of Belarus.
The dead refugees, as noted, were discovered on October 27 near the Latvian fence. According to the border committee, the bodies of the men were in close proximity to the culvert in the Latvian fence, and next to the refugees were a woman and two children. During the inspection, documents of an Iranian citizen were found, the report says. An investigative team and a medical team were called to the scene of the incident.
The woman told how the dead ended up on Belarusian territory. According to her, the men were taken to the border by Latvian law enforcement officers along with a group of refugees who were “forced to cross” into the territory of the republic under threat of physical harm. According to the border committee, “the suffering of exhausted people who were thrown out into the snow with corpses was filmed by the Latvians.”
According to the Belarusian side, the attitude of the Latvian military towards refugees “has turned into a form of sadism,” and “cynicism and inhumanity” have become the principles of action by military personnel of neighboring EU countries at the border.
In August, it became known about the death of a refugee from Egypt on the Polish-Belarusian border. The Border Committee then reported that the man died due to bullying by Polish security forces after he was “thrown out” onto Belarusian territory.
In 2021, several countries bordering Belarus (Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia) announced an unprecedented influx of illegal migrants from the territory of the republic. The EU accused Minsk of organizing illegal migration channels in order to force the EU to lift sanctions on the republic. In the summer of 2022, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko announced a weakening of control over the flow of illegal immigrants due to European sanctions: according to him, Minsk has “neither the money nor the strength” to restrain refugees who arrive in the country legally.
