Belgium will not impose sanctions on the import of Russian diamonds until at least next year. This statement was made by the country’s Prime Minister Alexander De Croo.

He explained that the ban will be introduced only after the start of work of the mechanism for tracing the origin of diamonds agreed upon by the G7 countries, which will come into force on January 1, 2024. De Croo noted that sanctions should not be premature.

“…If only we introduce a ban, diamonds will go to other markets,” the politician explained.

Previously, Kyiv called for a total ban on the import of Russian diamonds. However, the EU countries have not yet taken such drastic measures. At the end of the summer, G7 members launched a diamond certification system. Before this, Bloomberg wrote that a ban on trade in precious stones from the Russian Federation could be included in the 12th package of sanctions. However, after the package was published, this item was not on the list.
