On Tuesday, July 11, the Ministers of Defense of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia signed a joint declaration according to which the airspace of these states is opened for the military activities of the allies in the North Atlantic Alliance.
In accordance with the document, NATO members are given the opportunity to use the airspace of the Baltic countries without restrictions for deterrence measures, enhanced watch and large-scale exercises.
At the same time, Lithuania plans to invest more than 140 million euros in the development of the infrastructure of its air base, which hosts the contingent of allies in the North Atlantic Alliance.
NATO member states previously had the opportunity in certain situations to use the airspace of the Baltic countries. In particular, in June, British aviation aircraft flew 21 times into the airspace of the region in three weeks as part of NATO operations in response to flights by the Russian Air Force.
It was about the Typhoon fighters, which were in Estonia to protect the eastern flank of NATO. This aircraft was used as rapid response aircraft.
