Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, at a meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, conveyed an apology to Moscow in connection with the death of peacekeepers in Karabakh. About it reported official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova.

“The meeting of Sergei Lavrov with the head of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry at the UN began with the words of an apology from official Baku in connection with the death of Russian peacekeepers,” Zakharova wrote in Telegram.

On September 20, Russian peacekeepers came under fire from the Azerbaijani military. A vehicle with five servicemen was attacked near the village of Janiyatag when the peacekeepers were returning from an observation post. All the soldiers in the car died.

The second incident occurred on the same day, but, according to the Azerbaijani Prosecutor General’s Office, the peacekeepers were fired upon by “unidentified members of illegal Armenian armed groups.” One soldier was killed and another was wounded.

Baku promised to investigate what happened, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev brought an apology to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

On September 19, Azerbaijan began “anti-terrorism measures” to “restorate the constitutional order” in Nagorno-Karabakh. The next day, September 20, the Karabakh authorities announced a ceasefire and the surrender of weapons.
