90,000 young and old are expected until Friday in Le Grand-Bornand, for an ecological and committed festival to educate children, especially on screens. 600 shows are on the bill.

The festival “Au Bonheur des mômes”, in the resort of Grand-Bornand (Haute-Savoie), celebrates from Sunday to Friday its 30e edition, a carefree bubble before the start of the school year, but also to raise young people’s awareness of civic engagement. Some 90,000 spectators, for a year-round population of 2,000 inhabitants, are expected at this meeting place for children and performing arts, where 90 local and international companies (Italy, Canada, Switzerland, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium ) will give nearly 600 performances.

“What children will we leave on the planet?”

This festival, which takes place in different places in the resort, is intended “engaged”, defending ecology, the right to be different and living together according to Isabelle Pochat-Cotilloux, general and administrative director of the event. On Wednesday, the festival, with a budget of one million euros, half of which comes from its own revenue, will present its great plea “What children will we leave on the planet?”, raising awareness in particular of the danger of screens. Among the first signatories, the photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand, the editor and former minister Françoise Nyssen, and the actors Jacques Gamblin and Charles Berling.

“We do not take children for fools or purses on legs”, adds Alain Benzoni, general and artistic director, endeavoring to refuse any commercial operation during this week. Sign of attachment to manifestation, “children who came thirty years ago come today with their children”, notes Ms. Pochat-Cotilloux. A professional space also allows 300 programmers to come and do their shopping.
