Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan called for the deployment of peacekeepers with a UN mandate to Nagorno-Karabakh, which will ensure stability and security in the region. He stated this during a meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation in Karabakh.
“I call on the Security Council to demonstrate its authority by taking the following urgent actions: <...> “immediately dispatch a UN mission composed of staff from various agencies to Nagorno-Karabakh to monitor and assess the human rights, humanitarian and security situation,” he said (quote according to RIA Novosti).
In addition, Mirzoyan called on the UN Security Council to “condemn the resumption of hostilities and attacks on civilian settlements and infrastructure, and demand full compliance with obligations under international humanitarian law, including those related to the protection of civilians.”
On September 19, Azerbaijan announced the start of “anti-terrorist measures” necessary for the “restoration of the constitutional order” in Nagorno-Karabakh. The next day, Karabakh authorities announced the conclusion of agreements on a complete ceasefire.
The Kremlin stated that the issue of Karabakh’s ownership has been resolved, and there are prerequisites for Baku and Yerevan to sign a peace treaty. Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov previously noted that Russian peacekeepers continue to perform their functions in the region.
