A ban on the import of fish and seafood products from Norway will allow domestic producers to occupy vacated niches in the domestic market, stated RIA Novosti Russian Ambassador to Oslo Teimuraz Ramishvili.

At the end of June, the government introduced a ban on the import of fish and seafood products from unfriendly countries, including Norway. The restrictions will remain in effect until the end of the year and will also affect supplies from the United States, European Union countries, Canada, Ukraine and other countries.

“This measure will create an opportunity for domestic producers to occupy vacant trade and production niches in the Russian market, including in the premium segment, and create a certain groundwork for increasing the export of national fish products to friendly countries,” the ambassador said.

Rosrybolovstvo previously clarified that we are talking about boiled fish, canned fish, caviar, as well as canned crustaceans, mollusks, etc. The measure should “free up certain market niches, including in the premium segment, which will be filled by domestic manufacturers,” the department reported.

Executive Director of the Association of Production and Trade Enterprises of the Fish Market Alexander Fomin said that the countries mentioned in the resolution did not actually carry out supplies anyway, so the market will not notice these restrictions. The head of the Fisheries Information Agency, Alexander Savelyev, also pointed out that Russian fishermen annually produce about five million tons of seafood, which can fully satisfy domestic consumption.
