The African Union (AU) is becoming a permanent member of the G20, Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi said during the G20 summit.

“For a G20 that is more inclusive and more proactive for the global South! Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi warmly invites the Chair of the African Union, President of the Comoros Azalee Assoumani, to join other G20 leaders as the African Union becomes a permanent member of the G20. Key outcome of the G20,” wrote also Bagchi on platform X (formerly Twitter).

On September 6, Vedomosti, citing the representative of the Russian President in the G20, Svetlana Lukash, wrote that at the summit it is planned to admit the African Union to the G20 membership. In addition, Modi advocated the inclusion of the AU in the G20. Reuters then wrotethat the African Union can enter the G20 only next year, it will receive permanent member status.

In March 2023, at the G20 foreign ministers’ summit, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that his G20 colleagues had previously agreed on the inclusion of the AU as a full member, similar to the EU.

The G20 summit is taking place on September 9-10 in New Delhi under the chairmanship of India. Earlier, Vedomosti wrote that this year the participating countries may for the first time not agree on a joint document due to a number of contradictions between them, in particular on issues of world politics and climate.
