Prime Minister Netanyahu closes Temple Mount in Jerusalem to Jews before Ramadan ends
Israel has banned Jews and tourists from visiting the Temple Mount until the end of Ramadan, but the restrictions will not apply to Muslims. The decision was made after a meeting on security issues, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said.
The Cabinet of Ministers also instructed to use forces to protect those praying at the Western Wall and the roads leading to it.
During the celebration of Ramadan (since the beginning of last week), a total of over 2.6 thousand Jewish pilgrims climbed the Temple Mount.
On Wednesday night, more than 350 Palestinians were detained there, who barricaded themselves in the mosque. Local media say that the conflict on the Temple Mount during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan was provoked by recent Israeli rocket attacks from Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.
The Temple Mount is located on the east side of the Old City. Here was the First, and then the Second Temple in Jerusalem. The Third Temple will also be located here. Currently, two especially revered Muslim shrines are located on the mountain – the Al-Aqsa mosques and the Dome of the Rock.
