The re-election of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan dealt a blow to the EU’s claims to be the world’s superpower, according to a Telegraph article.
The author of the article points out that until recently Brussels tried to persuade Turkey to join the EU, but Erdogan’s presidency complicates the prospects for strengthening ties with Europe.
“Brussels can only curse the day it decided that Turkey could become a full-fledged member of the alliance. Erdogan’s re-election for a five-year term represents a serious challenge for the EU and undermines its status as a self-proclaimed superpower with soft power comparable to that of the United States or China,” writes author.
According to the chairman of the Turkish High Electoral Commission Ahmet Yener, Erdogan won the second round of the presidential elections with more than 52% of the vote. The final results of the elections will be published no earlier than June 1.
