There is an explosive demand for minor employees in the labor market. In 2023, more than 40 thousand vacancies were opened on the HeadHunter platform alone, available for candidates over 14 years old. According to HeadHunter, most often schoolchildren are willing to be hired as couriers, promoters, salespeople and cashiers.

The largest number of vacancies are in the trade and service sectors. Over the past year, the number of offers for teenagers has tripled, although such personnel work less often, and their work has to be paid in full, said Felix Kugel, managing director of the personnel company Unity: “This is rather a cry of despair. You need to understand that there are legal restrictions: work should not be harmful to health, the working day can last no more than four hours, teenagers can only work in their free time from school.

Considering the total number of unemployed people, our unemployment rate is almost zero, so it is impossible to say unequivocally that hiring minors is cheaper. At some stage, perhaps, but this will not last long, because the labor shortage will one way or another affect many processes, including wages. A large-scale issue cannot be solved by teenagers.”

One of the most popular professions among teenagers is a delivery employee. The demand for couriers almost quadrupled over the past year, according to Avito Rabota. Specialized services admit that the market was not ready for such rapid growth.

Yandex Food, for example, told Kommersant FM that over the past year the number of orders in Moscow has increased by 2.5 times, in St. Petersburg by 5 times, and in the regions by 16 times. To attract couriers, a whole strategy has been developed, from outdoor advertising to the “Refer a Friend” program. And teenagers are also willingly hired as couriers, said Valeria Komarova, head of the PR department for food tech services at Yandex:

“Many couriers who come to cooperate with our services view this as a temporary part-time job between a job that has ended and the main one that will come sometime in the future. Another option is students who work part-time. We have a certain proportion of minor employees; we hire people from 16 years of age. Especially many teenagers come in the summer, during the holidays.

Some couriers, knowing that the pre-New Year season is the busiest, purposefully come at this time when they can make quite good money. Over this year, the average income of couriers has increased by about 30%. Now, on average in Moscow, couriers receive more than 80 thousand rubles, and in more active seasons this amount can reach 200 thousand rubles.”

In the summer of 2023, a law came into force allowing employees over 14 years of age to be hired. They will only need parental consent. Already in November, the Avito Work service recorded a 60% increase in teenagers’ interest in employment. They often occupy positions as waiters, hostesses, and work in hotels or agricultural enterprises. However, not all employers are ready to entrust tasks to children.

General Director of TTISI, HR expert Vasily Pigin says that many managers accept teenagers only as educational therapy, at the request of parents from among their acquaintances: “As an employer and entrepreneur, I meet halfway when someone asks me to involve their child, they say they say, teach your mind. But still we are not talking about full-fledged work. There are some simple tasks, for example, scanning documents or routine operations with a database, where constant supervision is not required and there is no great responsibility. But I am against teenagers replacing janitors, couriers, and the like.

Involving teenagers in work is a very good thing, but with a very serious caveat that this is done for educational and educational purposes.”

Housing and communal services were also among the leaders in areas where there is an acute shortage of workers. According to the Avito Work service, over the past year the number of offers for janitors and similar professions increased by 33%. And the average salaries of such specialists have increased by about 25%; now the salary of a janitor is about 41 thousand rubles.
