On March 13, SIPRI presented the traditional annual report on the international arms trade, providing for comparison data for two five-year periods: 2013-2017 and 2018-2022. Russia was in the list of the largest exporters in both periods. According to the results of the second five-year plan, it is in 2nd place after the United States, which increased its share in the world market, if we compare the two indicated periods, from 33 to 40%. Russia’s market share declined over the same periods from 22% to 16%. Following in the list of exporters are France, China and Germany. Over the past five years, these five countries accounted for 76% of arms sales.
According to analysts’ forecasts, Russia’s share will decrease and theoretically it may give way to France in the future, which has increased its figures from 7.1 to 11% over the past five years, reducing the gap from the Russian Federation. This country actively satisfies the demand of Asia and Oceania (now 44% of all French deliveries go there, the share of this region in Russian exports is 65%) and the Middle East. According to SIPRI, by the end of 2022, France had more orders for major weapons for export than Russia.
