Tatarstan to resign as president after Minnikhanov’s term ends

Deputies of the State Council (Parliament) of Tatarstan amended the constitution of the republic. According to the adopted law, the position of the president of the republic is renamed into the “head”. The additional name “rais” also appears. From Arabic, this word is translated as chairman, chief.
At the same time, until the end of his term of office, the current leader of the republic, Rustam Minnikhanov, will continue to be called president. The transitional provisions of the constitution stipulate that the new title would apply only to the newly elected highest official of the republic.
Rustam Minnikhanov was elected for another term in the fall of 2020. The term expires in 2025.
Tatarstan remained the only subject of the Russian Federation where the head is called the president. This is contrary to the federal law on public authority, according to which the republic had to change its constitution by 2023.
Changes to the constitution of Tatarstan were supported by 79 deputies of the republic, two voted against. The amendments were also supported by Rustam Minnikhanov and the first president of Tatarstan, Mintimer Shaimiev. The changes will take effect on January 1.
