An attempt was made on the new mayor of Mariupol Konstantin Ivashchenko, the official was not injured, reports TASS with reference to a source in the city hall.
“Yes, it was, everyone is alive, everything is in order,” the agency’s source said in response to a question about the assassination attempt.
It is specified that the place of the assassination attempt – the territory of the Mariupol Zoo – is cordoned off by law enforcement officers. According to law enforcement agencies, there were no casualties.
At the end of April, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu reported to President Vladimir Putin that Mariupol had been taken under control. The remnants of the Ukrainian militants took the territory of Azovstal and kept civilians there, the Ministry of Defense claimed. Putin canceled the assault on the plant and ordered to block it. The Russian Defense Ministry opened a humanitarian corridor for civilians and invited the militants to surrender. The evacuation took place with the participation of representatives of the UN and the Red Cross. On May 20, Shoigu reported on the completion of the operation and the complete liberation of the territory of the Azovstal metallurgical plant in Mariupol.
Konstantin Ivashchenko is the former general director of the Mariupol Azovmash plant. He was a deputy from the Opposition Platform – For Life party of Viktor Medvedchuk. Former mayor Vadim Boychenko left the city on March 23.
