Taiwan’s investments in mainland China have fallen by 70% in 13 years – Kommersant

Taiwan has invested only 10% of its overseas investment in mainland Chinese businesses this year. This is 70% less than in 2010. This was reported by the Japanese economic Nikkei with reference to statistics from Taiwanese authorities.
According to the publication, for the period from January to November 2023, the volume of foreign direct investment in Taiwan amounted to $26 billion. This is 87% more than for the same period in 2022. Investment in mainland China amounted to 12% this year. In 2010, this figure was 84%. Compared to 2022, Taiwan’s investment in mainland China fell by 34% to $2.9 billion.
During the same time, Nikkei notes, there was a noticeable increase in Taiwanese investment in the United States. From January to November, they grew ninefold compared to the same period last year, to $9.6 billion. Taiwan’s investments in German businesses increased 25 times to $3.9 billion.
Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party is calling on Taiwanese businesses to get rid of their economic dependence on mainland China. To achieve this, the party provides benefits to Taiwanese companies that withdraw capital from mainland China.
