Taiwan’s chief of staff, Tsai Ing-wen, announced her resignation as leader of the ruling party, as the opposition Kuomintang wins local elections in most cities and counties.
Opposition Kuomintang candidates are leading the race for mayoral positions in four of the island’s six largest cities, including Taipei, according to the island’s central news agency. The Kuomintang continues to lead in smaller municipalities: in 13 out of 21 cities and counties.
Tsai Ing-wen stepped down as leader of the party after the DPP’s defeat in the local elections in 2018, but returned to leadership two years later. The Democratic Progressive Party has traditionally opposed rapprochement with mainland China.
