Dominique Schelcher, president of the Système U group, spoke of his concerns this Friday morning at the microphone of BFMTV. “SMEs and craftsmen are discovering the extent of the situation. The bill may not be multiplied by two, but by eight“.
This phenomenon of increase partly linked to the war in Ukraine should, according to him, have cascading consequences, since companies will be forced to pass on the price of their invoice to that of their products, fueling the inflationary spiral facing consumers.

According to the Myelin panelist, shelf prices should already increase by 10% by the end of the year, with a jump of 24.5% for meat and poultry or 18% for pasta . “For forty years we had an abundance of product availability, but the number of shortages [de stocks] has progressed. There are durable ones, such as oil or mustard, adds Dominique Schelcher. But there are also products that are beginning to be in short supply”, also due to harvests disrupted by unusual weather conditions this year.
Vigilance on energy
Faced with the risk of tensions on energy supplies, the government is trying to take measures. This winter, individuals and small businesses in France will be encouraged to moderate their electricity consumption during cold weather peaks, in exchange for advantageous rates the rest of the year. The government actually wants to relaunch and expand an offer known as tempo, which encourages lowering the heating on certain days to pass the winter peaks.

The objective is to reduce the tension on the electricity supply, while the risk of shortage increases for this winter with the forced shutdown of many nuclear reactors, which is currently boosting wholesale electricity prices to never before seen levels. Industrialists who consume large amounts of electricity have already been familiar with the system of “diffuse fading“: during a peak in electricity demand in the country, they agree to stop their production lines for a few minutes or a few hours, and are rewarded in exchange by contractual remuneration. The government launches a call for tenders for this every year.
