Switzerland has stopped issuing visas to holders of passports obtained in the new territories of the Russian Federation

Following the European Union, Switzerland stopped issuing Schengen visas to holders of Russian passports that were obtained in the Crimea, South Ossetia, Abkhazia, Donbass and Zaporozhye and Kherson regions.
This was reported in a statement published on the website of the Federal Council. It says that “the new Russian travel documents … are no longer accepted for obtaining a visa or crossing the external border of the Schengen area.”
The authorities of the country explain that Bern is obliged to follow such a decision of the European Union of December 8, 2022 in connection with the participation of Switzerland in the Schengen area.
Some Russians may be exempt, the statement said. It explains that visas can be granted to “travel document holders who prior to this date were already Russian citizens, as well as their descendants and minors or incapacitated persons.”
The decision has already entered into force.
Earlier, Switzerland suspended the simplified issuance of visas to citizens of the Russian Federation.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the EU decision not to issue Schengen visas to Russians living in Crimea, the DPR and the LPR “inhuman sanctions and a policy of segregation.”
