The department stressed that the increase in the level of terrorist threat is not associated with any specific event, the decision should be made based on an assessment of the situation “in the strategic and long term.”

According to the chief of the security police, Charlotte von Essen, “during the year, the threat of attacks from members of violent Islamism increased.” “Sweden has gone from a natural target for terrorist attacks to a priority target. It is now believed that this threat will continue for a longer period of time, and therefore I have decided to change the terrorist threat level,” she explained.

Sweden has had an increased threat level since autumn 2010. It was raised to 4 points only in November 2015 after a series of terrorist attacks in Paris that killed 130 people. A high terrorist threat level was in effect in Sweden from November 18, 2015 to March 2, 2016.
