Sweden announces fulfillment of conditions for joining NATO

Sweden has fulfilled all the necessary conditions for joining NATO, the Kingdom’s Foreign Minister Tobias Billström told reporters.
“It is true, we are still waiting for the ratification process by Turkey. But now we have come to the moment when Sweden and Finland have done what we promised to do under the agreement with Turkey,” leads his words TASS.
The Minister stressed that the decision on the extradition of persons demanded by Ankara is made not by the government, but by the courts. Sweden, he said, expects that Turkey will soon begin the process of ratifying the kingdom’s accession to NATO.
On January 9, Swedish Permanent Representative to the EU Lars Danielsson, as wrote Vedomosti called the dialogue with Turkey on the consent to Sweden’s entry into NATO fruitless. A day earlier, on January 8, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced that Sweden would not make further concessions to Turkey regarding the extradition of the Kurds.
Finland and Sweden applied to join NATO in mid-May last year against the backdrop of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine. At the end of June, the NATO leadership decided to invite these two countries to the alliance. On December 4, the Finnish Foreign Ministry explained that Moscow’s nuclear rhetoric was a key factor that prompted Finland to apply to join NATO.
The only countries that have not yet approved the membership of Finland and Sweden in the alliance are Hungary and Turkey. In December, Haavisto revealed that Hungary promised to ratify the applications in February 2023.
