The North Atlantic alliance is defensive. This statement was made on Monday, May 22, the head of the British Cabinet Rishi Sunak.
The politician was asked whether he was ready to confirm that the Storm Shadow cruise missiles transferred by London to Kyiv would be used by the Ukrainian army exclusively on the territory of Ukraine.
In response, Sunak said that “Ukraine is engaged in self-defense, and NATO itself is a self-defense alliance.” The Prime Minister called for Kyiv to be provided “with all the necessary means to defend itself.”
At the same time, official London is convinced that at the moment Ukraine’s entry into NATO is impossible. This statement was made by the head of the British Ministry of Defense Ben Wallace at a joint press conference with his German counterpart Boris Pistorius. According to him, it will be possible to start discussing this issue only after the end of the conflict.
According to Sunak, a cessation of hostilities in Ukraine alone will not be enough – it is necessary to achieve “just and lasting” peace.
