Two submarines of the Pacific Fleet (Pacific Fleet) of Project 636 “Varshavyanka” conducted exercises in the Sea of Japan to search for and destroy a mock enemy submarine, reports “RIA News” with reference to the press service of the Pacific Fleet.
The Pacific Fleet clarified that one of the submarines discovered a submarine that designated the enemy, and then attacked the target with a training torpedo. The submarine that fired the torpedo further practiced post-volley maneuvering and secretly left the area. The submarine, denoting an enemy submarine, carried out an evasive maneuver, the press service of the fleet said. The actions of the submarines were coordinated by the corvette of the Pacific Fleet “Gromky”, the agency reports.
April 14 Russian Ministry of Defense reported about the beginning of a sudden check of the combat readiness of the Pacific Fleet. It ended April 20th. More than 25,000 servicemen, 89 planes and helicopters, 167 ships, including 12 submarines, took part in the exercises. The purpose of the check, which was led by the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy Nikolai Evmenov, was called “increasing the ability to solve problems of repelling the aggression of a potential enemy.”
After the end of the check, it became known about the reshuffle in the leadership of a number of fleets. The commander of the Pacific Fleet, Admiral Sergei Avakyants, was fired. By information TASS and RIA Novosti, his place was taken by the commander of the Baltic Fleet, Admiral Vladimir Liina. Vice-Admiral Vladimir Vorobyov became the commander of the Baltic Fleet.
