NATO does not supply Ukraine with cluster bombs and phosphorus munitions, and does not recommend their use, declared NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on NTV.
“NATO has not recommended or supplied these types of weapons. We supply artillery and other types of weapons, but not cluster bombs,” he stressed (quote according to TASS).
German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock explained the refusal of such supplies by the fact that the country is guided by the UN Charter and international humanitarian law.
The TV channel clarifies that earlier the Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine Oleksandr Kubrakov, within the framework of the Munich Security Conference, asked for such supplies, explaining that their use is planned on “Ukrainian territory”.
About 110 countries have joined the convention banning the use, transportation, production and storage of cluster bombs, Russia and Ukraine are not among them. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba believes that since the Ukrainian side has not joined the convention, nothing prevents such supplies. About it writes “RIA News”.
The Russian authorities have repeatedly criticized the supply of Western weapons to Kyiv. In particular, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, warned that pumping Ukraine with weapons brings NATO closer to the dangerous line of a direct military clash with Russia.
Press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov said on January 30 that Western supplies of new weapons to Ukraine lead to a significant escalation of the conflict, but this is not capable and will not potentially change the course of events.
