NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has no plans to renew his powers. He stated this at a press conference in Germany.
“I do not plan to renew my powers. My personal plans are to fulfill my powers until autumn, I have no other plans,” noted Stoltenberg (quote from RIA Novosti).
June 17 Reuters and Bloomberg reportedthat Stoltenberg may be asked to remain in office for another year, as he continues to enjoy “broad support” in the alliance. It is noted that they tried to find a replacement for him, but the US representative, in a conversation with reporters, clarified that “it does not seem that at present there is a consensus within the alliance about his replacement.”
Among the candidates mentioned are Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and British Defense Minister Ben Wallace. White House press secretary Olivia Dalton did not comment on the information that Stoltenberg would be asked to stay for another year, but noted that Biden “totally” trusts him.
Stoltenberg has been NATO Secretary General since October 2014. Stoltenberg said in an interview with CNN on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference that he plans to leave this position in the fall of 2023. “I am leaving this fall, I am sure that the alliance will find a worthy person to replace me,” he said.
