Stepashin told why Putin became tougher towards the West

Former Russian Prime Minister Sergei Stepashin explained why Russian President Vladimir Putin has become tougher on the West than he used to be. He noted that this is a reaction to the “deception” of Russia.
“Of course, he became tougher towards those who, in fact, deceived him and our country,” says Stepashin.
He added that while Putin was replacing Stepashin as prime minister, he hoped that the country had finally made friends with the West “in a grown-up way.” However, everything became completely different.
Sergei Stepashin served as Prime Minister of the Russian Federation from May 19 to August 9, 1999, after which Vladimir Putin became prime minister, and on March 26, 2000 he was officially elected president.
