Today, 5 July, the European Statistical Agency presented data on producer price index (Producer Price Index) in the euro area for May. PPI fell by 1.9% compared to April and thus falls for the fifth month in a row. In addition, for the first time since 2020, the index showed a decrease and, compared to the same period of the previous year, by 1.5%. Analysts polled by Reuters had expected a smaller decline of 1.8% and 1.3%, respectively.
Experts monitor PPI as this index is a key indicator of general consumer inflation. The increase in prices in the euro area in June amounted to 5.5%. This is significantly lower than the maximum level recorded in October last year (10.6%). At the same time, inflation is still well above the target set by the European Central Bank (2%).
Well-known economists are arguing about the nature of inflation after the pandemic, read about it in the material “Kommersant” “They said, but did not cut off”.
