The US does not intend to block the entire Russian financial system, said US sanctions policy coordinator James O’Brien. Thus, he answered the question of whether official Washington intends to take measures to disconnect all Russian banks from the SWIFT system.
“We carefully study each bank and try to avoid or mitigate the damage that may occur if the bank is unable to carry out its operations. Thus, we see this as a gradual movement, and not as an attempt to block the entire Russian financial system at once, ”said O’Brien (quote according to TASS).
In addition, he added that the US wants to allow Russia to supply the food, fertilizer and energy it exports, especially to the “global South”. Nevertheless, the intention remains to deprive Russia of the resources to conduct a special operation in Ukraine.
Ten Russian banks, including the largest ones, have already been disconnected from SWIFT: Sberbank, VTBMoscow credit bank, RosselkhozbankFC “Opening“, “Russia”, Promsvyazbank, Sovcombank, Novikombank and VEB.RF.
The Financial Times, citing sources, wrote that the EU, as part of the ninth round of sanctions, could impose a ban on transactions with three more Russian banks.
