State Department approves sale of Volcano remote mining systems to Taiwan

Taiwan will receive Volcano anti-tank mining systems from the United States. The US State Department approved their sale to Taipei. The deal will cost $180 million. This is reported by Reuters, citing its own sources in the Pentagon.
The upcoming deal is a response to China’s ever-increasing political, economic and military pressure on Taiwan, the US defense department said. The next delivery of Volcano should be expected in a month.
The Taiwanese Ministry of Defense hopes that the resulting systems will effectively resist Beijing.
The situation around Taiwan escalated in early August 2022 after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taipei. China, which considers the island its own territory, protested against the politician’s visit and responded with large-scale military exercises.
The Volcano remote mining system belongs to engineering ammunition. It serves as a delivery to the place of mining and installation of mines that are part of the FESKEM family of scattered mines. Ammunition can be installed from a helicopter or from ground vehicles.
