On the day of the 70th anniversary of the death of Joseph Stalin, the Buryat republican branch of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation announced the creation of a social movement of the same name, the purpose of which would be “to study the ideas and heritage of the great figure.” According to the Communists, some historians and social activists have already expressed their desire to join this organization. The federal leadership of the Communist Party “watches with interest” the initiative of the Buryat comrades.
The decision to create a social movement “Stalin” was made by the Buryat communists on March 5 during the round table “Epoch and Personality”, timed to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the death of the Soviet leader. As reported on the website of the republican cell of the Communist Party, the event was attended by representatives of the district party committees of Ulan-Ude, veterans, as well as young people, “bowing before the memory of the epoch-making figure.” Among others, the leader of the Buryat communists, State Duma deputy Vyacheslav Markhaev spoke at the round table.
Mr. Markhaev told Kommersant that the social movement should unite people who study the legacy of Joseph Stalin. At the same time, membership in the Communist Party of the Russian Federation for participants in the new organization will not be mandatory – everyone will be able to join the movement, regardless of political affiliation. “Some historians and public figures have already expressed their desire to join the organization,” the parliamentarian said, without specifying, however, who exactly he was talking about.
According to Vyacheslav Markhaev, the initiative of the Buryat republican committee of the Communist Party is not something unprecedented. For example, in the neighboring Irkutsk region there is a historical and cultural society “Our Stalin”, which since 2000 has been working on the basis of the Oktyabrsky district committee of the Communist Party. “However, it does not have legal registration as a public organization,” the communist specified. The Buryat comrades were given the task of formalizing the movement. Mr. Markhaev found it difficult to name the terms of this process.
It should be noted that a public movement with the same name already exists in Dagestan – it was registered in 2001 by Azerkhan Pashaev, a resident of Makhachkala, who organized a Stalin museum at his home.
Member of the Presidium of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, State Duma deputy Sergei Obukhov told Kommersant that the leadership of the Communist Party did not give instructions to perpetuate the name of Joseph Stalin in this way, but was watching with “interest” the initiative of the Buryat comrades. According to the parliamentarian, it can be compared with another grassroots initiative – the mass installation of monuments to the Soviet leader. “This is happening as part of the long-term struggle of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation to preserve the Soviet legacy. In the early 90s, patriotism was called the refuge of scoundrels, communists were called “red-browns”, and veterans were beaten with truncheons. But we have reversed this attitude, including towards Stalin,” said Mr. Obukhov.
It should be noted that the image of the “leader of the peoples” is actively used not only by the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, but also by its “twin” – the party “Communists of Russia” (supporters of Gennady Zyuganov consider it a “spoiler”, whose main task is to take votes from the “real” Communist Party in elections) . For example, on March 5, she sent a letter to the Ministry of Education with a proposal to introduce “Stalin’s hours” in high school – three mandatory lessons about the personality of the Soviet leader. As the chairman of the Communists of Russia Sergey Malinkovich told RIA Novosti, the first lesson should tell about Stalin as the “supreme commander of the Soviet army”, the second should be devoted to his transformations (collectivization, industrialization, etc.), and the third should tell schoolchildren about “the architect of the new world order that emerged after the Great Patriotic War.” A similar letter was sent by the “Communists of Russia” to the Ministry of Education and Science, proposing to introduce “Stalin clocks” in universities as well.
