Latvian law enforcement agencies have changed the preventive measure for Marat Kasem, editor-in-chief of Sputnik Lithuania, who was arrested on suspicion of espionage and violation of anti-Russian sanctions. Kasem has been released from custody on bail, local media reported.
Until the trial, Kasem will be under house arrest and under police surveillance. In the period from 23:00 to 07:00, he must stay at home at the place of registration and check in at the police station twice a week.
Marat Kasem, editor-in-chief of Sputnik Lithuania, was detained by Latvian special services in Riga in January. At the court hearing on choosing a measure of restraint, Kasem’s lawyer insisted that he be released on bail, but the court sanctioned the arrest of the journalist.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs recalled that six months before his arrest, Kasem spoke about persecution by the authorities of the Baltic states for his professional activities. The agency called the court’s decision against Kasem the revenge of dictatorial regimes for his freedom, truth and adherence to principles.
