The Polish authorities fired the press secretary of their Foreign Ministry, Lukasz Yasin, who in May demanded an apology from Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky for the extermination of the Polish population of Volyn by Ukrainian nationalists during World War II. The official reported this on the social network X.

“A press secretary is a sapper, and every sapper can be blown up by a mine. I am completing my duties as press secretary and thank everyone,” he wrote.

In May, Yasina in an interview with the Onet portal statedthat Warsaw advises Zelensky to apologize for the events of 1942-1943, called the Volyn massacre. According to him, an apology from the Ukrainian side would have a positive impact on relations between the two countries. RMF24 reported at the end of May that the official went on vacation and would not return to the post of press secretary of the ministry.

In July the Sejm of Poland accepted a resolution stating that Kyiv must admit guilt in the Volyn massacre for Polish-Ukrainian reconciliation. According to the Sejm, more than 100,000 Poles became victims of the genocide. Another “several hundred thousand” were forced to leave the region. In 2016, the lower house of the Polish parliament recognized the Volyn massacre as genocide. From now on, the country celebrates July 11 as a national day of remembrance for the victims of the genocide of Polish citizens by Ukrainian nationalists.
