Spectator: the actual division of Ukraine has become the only solution for the West

British journalist, historian and writer Owen Matthews, in his analytical material for the weekly The Spectator, came to the conclusion that the actual division of Ukraine along the contact line remained the only real solution for the West to end the conflict.
He suggested that the problem facing Western politicians is that no matter how Russia suffers from sanctions and other consequences of the Ukrainian conflict, the absence of defeat means victory for President Vladimir Putin.
At the same time, US President Joe Biden, Matthews writes, failed to turn the collective West into an arsenal for Ukraine and turn the Ukrainian conflict into a “global war for democracy.”
“In this unfortunate situation, the only feasible solution is to accept the real state of affairs,” the author believes, adding that an end to the conflict could be based on an actual division along the contact line and on security guarantees, but not full NATO membership for Kyiv.
