Spanish authorities urged energy companies to abandon Russian LNG

The Spanish authorities are urging companies to abandon new contracts for the supply of LNG from Russia. This is not a mandatory requirement, as there are no gas sanctions. Companies such as Naturgy, Repsol, Cepsa, BP, TotalEnergies, EDP, Pavilion, Enags, Met Energy and Enet Energy received letters. They contain a general call to “intensify the diversification of LNG supplies and abandon supplies from Russia.”
Against the backdrop of problems with the supply of pipeline gas to a historic low, Europe has increased its purchases of LNG, including from Russia. Spain has doubled its purchases of Russian LNG.
The European Commission in early March urged European companies not to renew long-term contracts for the purchase of LNG in Russia after their expiration. So far, this is a recommendation, while current long-term contracts for Russian LNG expire beyond the 2030 horizon.
