South Sudan has asked Russia to provide humanitarian aid for refugees from Sudan. There is not enough support from the UN World Food Program (WFP) for people arriving from the neighboring republic, the Minister for the Office of the South Sudanese President Barnaba Marial Benjamin told RIA Novosti.
“Our neighbor, the Republic of Sudan, has a serious crisis and internal conflict, which leads to a large number of humanitarian problems, many deaths and migrants. As a result of this, we are getting thousands of Sudanese refugees crossing the border,” Benjamin said.
According to him, South Sudan needs a large amount of humanitarian assistance. The African republic asked Russia to provide grain, medicine and “everything that is possible.”
In Sudan, since April 15, fighting has been going on between the Rapid Reaction Force (RRF) led by Mohammed Hamdan Daglo and the regular army. In the summer, the parties began negotiations, but at the end of July they announced their completion without results – fighting continued on the territory of the republic.
South Sudanese President Salva Kiir arrived in Russia on September 27. Russian leader Vladimir Putin held talks with him on September 29. The parties discussed trade and economic relations between the countries, as well as humanitarian assistance.
