Small rebound for the French automotive market in August

The market for new cars in France experienced a small rebound of 3.79% year-on-year in August, but remains at a low level compared to the pre-pandemic period, as it is still affected by shortages of components. A total of 91,403 passenger cars were registered for the first time last month, around 29% less than in 2019, the Automotive Platform (PFA), which represents manufacturers and equipment suppliers, said on Thursday.

This positive result breaks a downward trend observed since the beginning of the year, even if the months of August, marked by closures of companies and car dealerships, are traditionally weak and therefore not very significant. Over eight months, the decline in registrations remains 13.81% compared to the same period of 2021, according to the PFA, still in the context of shortages of semiconductors and electronic parts which cause production stoppages in car factories. .
