Slovak President Zuzana Caputova filed a claim for personal protection against former Prime Minister and head of the opposition party Smer Robert Fico, the presidential press service reported.

“The President recognizes that as a public figure she is required to withstand a higher level of criticism. However, she is not obliged to put up with increasing public bullying and unfounded accusations of violating the constitution and laws,” stated presidential press secretary Martin Strizhenets (quote from Hlavné správy).

The president and her close people have repeatedly received threats, he added.

Commenting on this information, Fico said that the head of state is filing a lawsuit “against the strongest opposition politician” two weeks before the parliamentary elections. He believes that Chaputova is “obviously interfering in the election campaign.” Fico previously stated that Chaputova was allegedly an American agent and pointed to her possible connections with billionaire George Soros.

Fico was Prime Minister of Slovakia from 2006–2010 and 2012–2018. Parliamentary elections in Slovakia are scheduled for September 30.
