The referendum on amendments to the Slovak constitution failed for the eighth time, the Bratislava TV channel TA3 reported, citing the state statistics department.
The reason for the failure of the event was the low turnout of the population. On the agenda was the question of the possibility of prematurely terminating the powers of parliament.
To make a decision, at least 50% of citizens, or 2.2 million, were required to turn out. About 27.26% of the population of Slovakia took part in the referendum. The event was ignored, including by the president of the country, the speaker of parliament, and the acting prime minister.
Thus, over the 30 years of the country’s existence, only 1 referendum out of 9 was successfully held in it, on the republic’s accession to the European Union (2003). Then 52.15% of the population took part in the referendum.
