Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu held telephone conversations with UN Secretary General António Guterres, reported in the Telegram channel of the Russian Ministry.
The main topic for discussion was the conditions for the safe operation of the Zaporozhye NPP. Shoigu and Guterres also discussed the work of the mission to establish the facts of the shelling of the VIZO in Yelenovka of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) and the UN initiatives to simplify the export of Russian food and fertilizers.
Zaporizhia NPP is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe and has been repeatedly shelled by Ukraine. Reports of the shelling of Energodar, next to which the ZNPP is located, by the armed forces of Ukraine (APU) appeared on August 13, 14 and 15, including the nuclear power plant.
Earlier, at the request of Russia, a meeting of the UN Security Council was held, at which the subject of shelling of the ZNPP was discussed. According to Dmitry Polyansky, Deputy Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN, at the meeting no one supported the Ukrainian version of what is happening around the station. The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation called the actions of Ukraine nuclear terrorism.
Despite this, the authorities of 42 countries declaredthat Russia is obliged to return the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant under the control of Ukraine, so that Kyiv would regularly fulfill its obligations on nuclear and radiation safety, the statement said.
On July 29, the Deputy Minister of Information of the DPR, Daniil Bezsonov, reported on his Telegram channel about the shelling of a prison in the village of Yelenovka, where Ukrainian prisoners of war are kept, as a result of which more than 50 people were killed. That the UN will launch a mission to establish the facts of the shelling of the pre-trial detention center in Yelenovka, Guterres declared August 3 at a press conference on the third report of the Global Response Group on the food, energy and financial crises.
