Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu checked the progress of modernization of experimental bases of the defense department’s research institutes near Moscow. During a working trip to the troops of the Western Military District, he visited the 12th and 48th Central Research Institutes (CNII), the press service of the Ministry of Defense reported.

“The Minister of Defense was informed that thanks to the improvement of the experimental base of the 12th Central Research Institute of the Russian Ministry of Defense, the number of weapons and military-special equipment that have passed tests has increased significantly,” says the department’s press release (quoted by Interfax). It is noted that the modernization of the institute’s experimental testing base will make it possible to reduce testing time, increase the institute’s throughput and bring test conditions as close as possible to full-scale explosive experiments.

According to website The Ministry of Defense, the experimental and testing base of the 12th Central Research Institute has complexes for research and testing of weapons and military equipment for resistance to the damaging factors of a nuclear explosion. The base also houses installations for testing weapons samples for the effects of electromagnetic fields of natural and man-made origin.

Sergei Shoigu also visited the 48th Central Research Institute of the Ministry of Defense. The head of the radiation, chemical and biological protection troops, Igor Kirillov, told the minister that the institute is now preparing for commissioning two new buildings of the research cluster. “The construction of new laboratory buildings will make it possible to identify biological threats, develop and manufacture means of indication and prevention, including vaccine preparations with testing of their effectiveness, and participate in international investigations into the probable use of biological agents,” the Ministry of Defense noted.

On website The Ministry of Defense indicates that the 48th Central Research Institute is the leading research organization of the military department on the issues of combating particularly dangerous infectious diseases and ensuring the biological safety of personnel of the Russian armed forces.
