Shoigu called the reason for the decision to conduct a special operation in Ukraine

The decision to conduct a special operation in Ukraine was made due to unacceptable threats to Russia’s security created by the Ukrainian side, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said at a plenary meeting of the First International Anti-Fascist Congress.
“For eight years, the Kyiv regime has committed egregious crimes against citizens of the DPR and LPR. Thousands of innocent people died, including children. At the same time, the military development of the Ukrainian territory by the North Atlantic Alliance began. Kyiv headed for NATO membership. All this has created unacceptable threats to the security of Russia,” Shoigu said (quoted from TASS).
According to him, this prompted the country’s leadership to decide on a special military operation. Shoigu added that her goal was “to protect the inhabitants of Donbass from genocide by the Kyiv regime.”
The Minister of Defense stated that in the very first days of the special operation, the Russian military “faced the inhuman tactics of Ukrainian formations.” According to him, the soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the national battalions are hiding in urban areas and are hiding behind the civilian population “like a human shield.” According to Shoigu, this is partly due to the composition of the Ukrainian army.
“After the anti-constitutional coup, new power structures emerged in the country – the so-called national battalions, professing the idea of neo-Nazism, racial intolerance towards everyone they consider to be non-Ukrainians,” the defense minister said.
President Vladimir Putin announced the start of the special operation on 24 February. Then the president called its goal the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine, as well as the protection of the civilian population of Donbass from genocide. During his speech at the Luzhniki Stadium at a concert in honor of the annexation of Crimea on March 18, Putin stated that the main reason and goal of the special operation was “to save people from this suffering and genocide.” In Ukraine, after the start of the special operation, martial law was introduced and mobilization was announced. The Russian Defense Ministry says that they strike only at military targets.
