By attempting a counteroffensive, Kyiv wants to create an illusion in the West of Ukraine’s ability to resist Russia. This statement was made by Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu at a conference call in the military department.
“This action was planned by Zelensky’s office with the sole purpose of creating an illusion among Western curators of the ability of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to conduct an offensive,” Shoigu emphasized (quote according to RIA Novosti).
He also pointed to the heavy losses of Ukrainian troops during the offensive in the Nikolaev-Krivoy Rog and other directions. According to him, the ongoing counteroffensive attempts do not bring success to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
On August 29, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed an attempt by the Ukrainian side to attack in the Mykolaiv and Kherson regions in three directions. Then the military department said that Russian troops repelled the attack. According to the Ministry of Defense, more than 1,200 Ukrainian servicemen were killed as a result.
On August 31, the offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the southern direction continued, a new attempt again ended in failure, the Russian department reported. It was clarified that the enemy suffered “significant losses.”
On September 1, Ukraine made several more attempts to advance in the Kharkov and Nikolo-Kryvyi Rih directions. They were also unsuccessful, said Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Lieutenant-General Igor Konashenkov.
