Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu at a meeting of the ministry board stated about the persistence of a difficult situation in the southwestern strategic direction as part of a special operation. Under these conditions, the Southern Military District is increasing the supply of modern weapons and equipment.

“In accordance with the activity plan, 17 organizational and staffing measures are being carried out, more than 16 thousand units of modern weapons and military equipment are being supplied, the construction and commissioning of more than 360 military infrastructure facilities are being completed,” he said.

The minister added that special attention is also paid to providing the military personnel stationed in the district and their families with housing, compliance with their social guarantees and health issues.

At the same board meeting, Mr. Shoigu reported about plans to form two combined arms armies and 13 formations, including 14 divisions and 16 brigades, by the end of 2024.

In February, Russian President Vladimir Putin turned on to the Southern Military District of the DPR, LPR, as well as the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, which became part of the country after the 2022 referendums. Now the district includes 19 regions, including the Rostov region, Crimea and Sevastopol.
