Usually, during the “induction” ceremony, the artists give a concert. Last November, Sheryl Crow performed her 1996 hit If It Makes You Happy on the show. That’s when she announced the availability of new material for the album. The public was incredibly surprised, because in 2019, after the release of her 11th disc Threads, the singer assured everyone that she did not intend to release any more albums, because she decided that there was “no point” in this. And it almost seemed to the public that her career was slowly winding down. By that time, the rock star had already defeated breast cancer, but continued to fight a brain tumor, as a result of which her creative activity, of course, subsided.
But no, inspiration suddenly returned to the artist last year, and she recorded her twelfth studio album called Evolution, and its release is scheduled for the end of March 2024. At the same time, the premiere of the dance single Alarm Clock, included in this album, took place, and the title song Evolution about artificial intelligence appeared the other day. Both singles are accompanied by laconic videos, where the 62-year-old artist with a guitar at the ready, as before, draws out her lines, cheerfully dancing against a blue background.
Guitarist Tom Morello, founder of Rage Against the Machine, took part in the recording of the song Evolution, recording a memorable guitar solo for it. The singer praised his performance as “alien” and taking her personally straight into outer space, figuratively speaking, of course.
The meaning of the single turned out to be filled with current problems of human evolution. Sheryl Crow worries that in the future, people’s consciousness will be subject to the mayhem of artificial intelligence: “As a mother, I want to leave my children a better world, a healthier planet,” the singer says in a statement about the album about her worries that AI will replace people. Many were immediately drawn to joke that if only she hadn’t croaked, because the singer’s surname, Crowe, translated into nothing more than “crow.”
The artist also explained that she really had no intention of recording new albums, because lately it has been practically unprofitable, the industry has been reoriented towards releasing singles that sell well via the Internet, and creating an album is a huge effort, according to her.
But last year, the singer was suddenly “overwhelmed”, and songs literally poured out of her soul one after another. Crow explained that the album’s music and lyrics came from “sitting in silence and writing from the depths of my soul.” The creation process began with Crow recording a couple of demos, which she sent to producer Mike Elizondo. The songs came one after another, and it soon became obvious that “this was going to be an album.”
Recalling her musical development, Sheryl Crow talks in an interview about how her parents, jazz musicians, immersed her in the world of exquisite melodies from birth. The first music she remembered was Percy Faith’s Alfie, and the first song she fell in love with was Petula Clark’s cheerful Downtown: “I remember being four or five years old and memorizing all the words to that song.” . I sat in the back of a car and sang at the top of my lungs, so I obviously have an affinity for British pop music.”
The song she can no longer listen to is Coldplay’s hit Yellow. At the same time, the singer claims that she loves Coldplay, but their song simply became popular at a time when she was in a very bad personal relationship. Sheryl Crow’s biggest hit, All I Wanna Do, was the song that changed her life. The artist states that it was this composition that allowed her to travel around the world and marked the beginning of her career. She remembers how she and the musicians were drinking margaritas in Pasadena (a city in California), accidentally went into a bookstore, and she came across a book of poems, which opened with a poem called Fun. Then they went back to the studio, where they continued to jam, and she suddenly started singing some of the words from this poem, thinking that she would rewrite everything later. But neither “later” nor at any other time she managed to make her better. Cheryl did not immediately recognize the hit and even thought that nothing would come of this song, but in the end the song turned out to be the most popular of all Crowe sang. So her career once began “fun”, but now even carefree country rock is so frightened by artificial intelligence and puzzled by the future of the planet that even the star from the Rock and Roll Museum, who gave up music, uncovered her vocal cords…
