The new group is aiming for the opening of the season
In Russia, the phenomenon called “girl group” has always been surrounded by stereotypical ideas about how such a structure works. It is common to think that girls band are beauties of different tastes with perky voices, in playful outfits and, of course, behind-the-scenes carabasses who want to make as much money as possible from girls and songs. Against this background, the musical model of the Nesladko group looks completely atypical, and the group itself is seen as one of the promising projects of the year.
On a Sunday evening, the bar with the reputation of being a very trendy place for young people is quite crowded, despite the weather, which is not particularly conducive to leaving the house. On stage there are four girls who deftly manipulate the keys, drums and guitars, songs are heard that do not really fit into the overall musical picture, but the audience accepts it all very emotionally.
The history of the Nesladko group is still short, but dynamic. Last year, the vocalists of the Komsomolsk group, which had already managed to make a bit of a splash in music circles (to the point where one of their songs entered the ZD hit parade a year and a half ago), Daria Deryugina and Arina Andreeva, decided to rely solely on themselves, their loved ones. There was a clear explanation for such a body movement. The main author of the group, Ivan Ryabov, left the group two years ago, and for some time Komsomolsk existed in the mode of one or two concerts a year. Daria and Arina were clearly not satisfied with this type of activity, and, showing incredible ease of growth, the girls put together a new group in which drummer and vocalist Svetlana Nikulina and bass guitarist and vocalist Elizaveta Khamkhidko play with them.
Musically, the girls, like Komsomolsk, are digging into the indie garden, but they do it in a completely different way. If “Komsomolsk” had a reaction to the moment and highly relevant lines, then “Nesladko” had songs that seemed not to be oriented in time at all. Girls rather dig into themselves than try to catch the vibe of the day. The second feature of the group is that all members of the quartet are authors, which, on the one hand, greatly simplifies the creation of a repertoire, on the other, can bring serious chaos to the intention of deciding on a sound.
“At the Center of Scandal,” the first album from “Nasladka,” was released last fall, and it’s really difficult to define its sound in one term. In ten tracks there is a real riot of styles and even taking into account the fact that the girls did not come up with anything radically new, it is very difficult to guess where the next song will turn. Synth-pop changes almost into punk, lyrical sovestrada turns into American country rock, violin-flutes next to the reading, steamships hum, seagulls scream.
“Sometimes it’s quite difficult for me to keep up with their imagination,” says the group’s manager Ilya Zinin, who has eaten a ton of salt in indie music, in a conversation with ZD. — For recording, they found a rather expensive analog studio in St. Petersburg, but it was worth it. In general, the group began before my eyes, and already at the stage of demo recordings made in the kitchen, I was sure that these girls would achieve their goal.”
Circumstances were such that songs for many local girl groups were written by men, and this greatly simplified the images of the artists: they sang about love as if they were revealing all their secrets to a psychologist. “It’s not sweet” is voiced by the female stream of consciousness in their writings, so it turns out as it is, and not as male writers see it. Some songs have lines that Eva Polna could have written, but the former vocalist of “Guests from the Future” seems to have more calories in her lyrics. “It’s not sweet” – more like castles in the air, even if their words fly out like from a machine gun.
In the format of a live concert, everything, of course, sounds smoother than on the album and has a common denominator, but this does not prevent at some point the audience of all ages from finding themselves dancing and not having complexes. So far “Nesladka” is a much more intimate group than the same “Komsomolsk”, but the girls are already preparing for the summer festivals. I wonder what will come of this.
